Pop-ups are a nuisance. You know, those advertisements or links that suddenly appear whenever you’re browsing a website. These pop-ups are usually malware - the short term for malicious software. Malware is primarily designed to access a private computer system or network and wreak havoc on the computer’s system or obtain information and data. You need to weed out these pop-up pests for good. Follow these tips.
Adjust the pop-up blocker settings manually.
In most major and frequently updated browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer, the pop-up blocker is on by default settings. You should manually check just in case. Here’s how to do it:
For Mozilla Firefox users
Click “Tools” in the menu bar of your browser. Click “Options”. Select “Content” in the window that appears. Check “Block pop-up windows” if there isn’t any check on it. Some websites use pop-ups to display secure content. If your pop-up blocker is turned on, these will not be displayed. Next thing you need to do is to click “Exceptions” in the same window. A smaller window would appear and you should type the website you want to be exempted. Click “Allow” when you’re done and “OK” when you’re back in the Options window.
For Internet Explorer users
Click “Tools” in the menu bar of your browser. Select “Pop-up Blocker”. Click “Turn On Pop-up Blocker” if it is off. Next, click “Pop-up Blocker Settings” underneath. A smaller window would appear. Type the address of the website you want to be exempted and click “Add”. In the same window, you can choose the blocking level you prefer—low, medium, and high. Low level allows pop-ups from secure sites, medium level blocks most automatic pop-ups, and high level blocks all pop-ups. You may also choose to check or uncheck “Play a sound when a pop-up is blocked” and “Show information bar when a pop-up is blocked”.
Install free spyware on your computer
Spyware is software that protects your computer from malware attacks. Search for them online and download one for free from a reliable website. Some spyware programs include 100% real time protection, antivirus capabilities, memory scanning, automatic updates, rootkit removal system, and behavior profiling to monitor your PC and update you on its security status. Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Super AntiSpyware, Emsisoft Anti-Malware, and Spybot - Search and Destroy are some of the most efficiently-performing free spyware. Ad-Aware in particular, can also scan pop-ups coming from flash drives and other hard drives.
Install pop-up blockers or cleaners
In case you want to double your protection, try downloading a third-party pop-up blocker. These programs can filter and prevent ads from popping out again and again. AdBlock Plus is most compatible with Firefox. Pop This!, AdAvert, Hitware Popup Killer Lite, or Maxthon’s Ad Hunter are just some of the top pop-up blockers that are free and easy to download.
Update your spyware, anti-malware, and anti-virus. Run these programs at least once a week. These programs usually do automatic updates and runs. You will be informed if there is something wrong with the program, and if there’s a new version you should get.
